Rooibos Tea Benefits
South African Rooibos (Red) Tea

Also popularly known as red tea, rooibos tea is obtained from a plant that grows abundantly in the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa. It has a naturally sweet taste, which is perfect for anyone looking for a refreshing drink without loading up on calories. With its full-bodied, earthy and naturally sweet flavor and nutritional elements, this type of herbal tea is well worth trying!

Benefits of Drinking Rooibos Tea

Did you know that aside from its delectable sweet taste, Rooibos tea is also linked with a number of health benefits? When you need a cool and refreshing drink that is low in calories, caffeine-free, high in minerals, and good for your health, then Rooibos tea may be a great option for you. Below are some of the features and benefits of this tea, which make this healthy beverage a perfect fit to your wholesome lifestyle.

Rich in Antioxidants

Rooibos tea contains high levels of polyphenols or organic chemicals noted for their antioxidant properties. They help eliminate free radicals in your body, which are responsible for premature ageing and a wide range of diseases. Aside from polyphenols, rooibos also contains other antioxidants such as nothofagi, aspalathin and glutathione(known as the master antioxidant). All of these powerful substances work together to enhance your immune system and overall health.

Loaded with Minerals

This type of tea is packed with essential minerals that support your health and well-being including potassium, manganese, fluoride, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium and calcium. Three of these minerals – fluoride, manganese and calcium – promote a healthy bone structure. For instance, manganese and calcium stimulates the production of key enzymes that repair damages and build stronger bones. Fluoride, on the other hand, is important in ensuring healthy teeth. So, by adding this mineral-rich tea in your diet, you are keeping your teeth and bones in excellent condition.

Calming Properties

If you find yourself tossing and turning in bed each night, then you need to find a better alternative to your favorite cup of coffee. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, which makes it ideal for those who have a problem getting a good night’s sleep. It can also help you manage stress and mood as rooibos tea has calming properties. Lastly, since this drink has zero caffeine content, there is no addictive component in this drink. You can obtain the amazing health benefits that this tea offers without the dangers of becoming addicted to it.

Skin Health

Another great feature of rooibos tea is its good levels of zinc and alpha hydroxy acid. These two substances are just what you need to achieve healthy and clear skin. To address skin issues such as acne, rashes and sunburns, you may apply this tea directly as a toner or as a facial wash. When preparing this tea as a toner, simply add some loose rooibos tea leaves to a cup of hot water, steep and cool. Then, mix the tea with apple cider vinegar and apply this homemade toner on your skin. This is an excellent – and completely natural – way to keep your skin smooth and free from blemishes.

This tea is incredible. It calmed my stomach. My daughter made some for me. I thought nothing of it, until I realized that it worked and it tastes really good.

I was just thinking about how drugs can cause tolerance. Like for example even green tea has caffeen and that can over time become addictive and people build tolerances.

I know rooibos has no caffeen but this made me think of the calming effect of rooibos. Would this too build tolerance and mean this soon would cause dependance over time? Like for example imagine drinking it often and then stopping, would this release the flood gates and cause stress to come crashing down?

      Hi Jack

I live in South Africa and have been drinking Rooibos all my life and I’m 32 years old now. I have absolutely no addiction to Rooibos and sometimes I don’t touch it for months and it has no adverse affect on my stress levels. I do naturally have more stress then most people because I’m a business owner and I find that Chamomile tea has a better calming effect.

I’m 78, drink a lot of red rooibos in the evening because I like it. Whenever I visit a doc he wants to know what medications i take. I startle them by not taking any prescriptions and the blood work is that of a healthy younger guy. Not much of a believer in all this antioxident hype and such. But the tea is tasty and does no harm.
